Gas Safety Inspections - what you need to know

We’ll be in your neighborhood - keeping you safe

To ensure the safe delivery of natural gas to your home or business, over the next several months, we will be in your neighborhood conducting a safety inspection of your natural gas meter. As required for your safety, the inspections will assess the condition of the service line pipe and can be quickly completed.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the purpose of these inspections?
The purpose is to ensure the safe delivery of natural gas to your home or business, and to make sure you are safe.

2. What does this inspection entail?
Our inspectors will use gas detection equipment to detect gas leakage and will perform a visual inspection for corrosion on all exposed piping up to the natural gas meter inside your home or business.

3. Is the inspection mandatory?
Yes, and we need your help to complete the work. In order to ensure the safe delivery of natural gas to your home or business, we are required by federal code and the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC) to perform a routine leak and corrosion inspection periodically.

4. How will I know if the gas pipes on my property need to be inspected?
All natural gas meters and service line piping in basements and meter rooms are required to be inspected. Our inspectors and contractors will be in your neighborhood, walking door-to-door, requesting access to your meter. If we miss you, we’ll leave a doorhanger with information on how you can schedule your appointment by phone or online.

5. What happens if you suspect a leak or corrosion is found on my pipe?
We will promptly address the concern at no cost to you.

6. Who will be performing the inspection?
A combination of employees and our qualified contractors will be performing the inspections. They will introduce themselves and show yellow or green picture identification badges before entering your home. You can expect to see inspectors in your neighborhood between Mondays and Saturdays during daylight hours, but could go into the early evening in an effort to make contact with you when you are home.

7. How long will the inspection take?
The inspection takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

8. What if I am not available at the time of the inspection?
If we are unable to access the meter and/or service line at the time of the inspection, we will leave behind a doorhanger so you can call to make an appointment. We will also try to contact you by phone, mail and email. To ensure your safety, if we are unable to gain access to your meter, you could be assessed a $100 fee and your gas could be shut off until your service line pipe is deemed safe.
