Upgrades at Substation in East Rochester to Provide Benefits for RG&E Customers
Upgrades will improve reliability and resiliency Improvements will provide faster response to outages; reduce likelihood of widespread outages
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — September 10, 2025 — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) continues its commitment to provide safe and reliable service to all customers. The Company began construction on Substation 62 in East Rochester this summer to improve the overall resiliency of the grid while also upgrading technology using up-to-date industry standards.
The upgrades will improve the reliability and resiliency of the substation that powers 21 MW to more than 3,400 customers in East Rochester. The modern digital equipment will make it easier to restore power and reduce the likelihood of widespread outages in the area.
Work includes distribution circuit upgrades to two existing 34.5KV circuits to accommodate new equipment inside the substation.
“With the addition of the new distribution circuit, increased capacity at this substation will support the growing demand of the residential and commercial customers that it serves,” said Jesus Venegas Salazar, RG&E substation project manager.
Updated support equipment, such as existing metal support structures, will be removed and replaced with modern, lower-profile equipment. A new underground cable system will also be installed. The improvements to the outdated infrastructure will enhance the overall appearance of the substation as well.
“Residents and business owners in the Town and Village of East Rochester are excited and thankful that we have a partner like RG&E that continues to invest in the well-being of all who live, work, and play in our community, “ said Town/Village of East Rochester Administrator Martin D’Ambrose. “Thank you for the improvements to our Substation.”
The $12.3 M project is scheduled for completion in 2026. These upgrades are part of RG&E’s commitment to modernize an aging grid, making improvements to better serve customers and meet their growing energy needs of today and tomorrow.
