Smart City Technology Program

The Smart City Technology Program helps municipalities enhance their public services through innovative, networked technologies.

These innovative, networked technologies include: 

  • Lighting Control Nodes- Enable efficient dimming and remote light management 
  • Smart Sensors - Monitor traffic, energy use, and air quality in real-time 
  • Cameras and Applications- Capture and analyze data for informed decision-making 
  • Networked systems- Unlock real-time insights to improve operations and planning 

 

These tools empower cities and towns to: 

  • Improve energy efficiency 
  • Enhance public safety 
  • Make data-driven decisions 
  • Deliver better community services 

 

Here’s what to expect:  

  1. Submit a Request 
  2. Once the request is reviewed, you will be asked to provide: 
    • Manufacturing specifications for each new device  
    • A Letter of Authorization (if you’re not an authorized municipal representative) 
    • A completed Streetlight Application (if creating a new account) 
  3. Engineering Review and Costs 
    • Our team will assess:
      • Pole loading capacity 
      • Electric load requirements 
      • Unmetered billing needs 
    • If upgrades are needed: 
      • The requestor could receive an invoice for system upgrades and/or pole replacement if applicable (minus pole depreciation and salvage value). 
      • Payment is required before utility infrastructure changes are made.
  4. Device Installation
    • Once payment is received, utility will do a final review and provide approval to start installation. 
    • Municipality will install device according to NYSEG/RG&E’s standards. 

 

Important Information 

Pole Attachment Agreement: 

  • Devices follow the terms of existing Pole Attachment Agreement 
  • If your municipality does not have an existing Pole Attachment Agreement, our Streetlighting team will contact you to guide you through the application process 
  • If the device will be installed on a NYSEG/RG&E owned pole, refer to your current Pole Attachment Agreement for details on rental rates.
