RG&E to Upgrade Substation that Powers Seabreeze Amusement Park

$17.6 million project to improve reliability and increase capacity for more than 2,000 customers

Construction set to begin this Fall

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — September 30, 2025 — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) will begin reliability upgrades this month on a substation that serves more than 2,000 customers, including Seabreeze Amusement Park. The Company is investing $17.6 million to upgrade this substation, to improve reliability and meet increases in demand for energy in Irondequoit.

“The upgrades at Substation 51 in the Town of Irondequoit will be vital for energy reliability,” said Larissa Rosario, business unit manager for RG&E. “These investments will enhance capabilities for residential and commercial customers, including the iconic Seabreeze Amusement Park.”

Substation 51 is located at 40 Topper Drive in the Seabreeze region of Irondequoit and has been in service since the 1950s. It is an area that has seen an increase in energy demand based on growing customer development. The existing transformer will be upgraded with a new, more efficient one. Other upgrades include the installation of a new control house, new switchgears, and a new perimeter fence.

The substation is surrounded on three sides:  Irondequoit Bay to the east, Lake Ontario and Seabreeze Amusement Park to the north, and Durand Eastman Park to the west, making load relief options extremely limited. These upgrades will help with load growth and the increase in energy demand from this thriving community.

Since 2023, RG&E has completed dozens of major capital projects and invested more than $200 million in the region, upgrading aging infrastructure and working to ensure customers have safe and reliable power when they need it.

Construction is expected to begin in July, with an estimated completion in late 2026.
