RG&E’s Mendon Gate Station Rebuild Ensures Customers Have Reliable Heat

$17.2M in improvements to equipment to support safe and reliable delivery of gas service to 150,000 customers

Upgrades made possible by prior rate case; investing directly into communities

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — December 11, 2025 — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) has completed a rebuild of its Mendon Gate Station in Mendon. The station is a gas service source for 150,000 customers on the east side of Rochester.

The facility receives natural gas from a high-pressure transmission pipeline and prepares it for distribution to customers. The rebuild included removing and replacing all aging piping and equipment, making service more reliable for customers.

“The completion of this project came at a great time, as we’ve reached the winter heating season,” said David Bovee, senior project manager of Major Construction for RG&E. “The replacement of aging infrastructure makes it more reliable for customers, ensuring they have heat when they need it during the colder months.”

“RG&E’s investment in the Mendon Gate Station strengthens the reliability of our local energy infrastructure,” said Town of Mendon Supervisor John Moffitt. “We appreciate the continued commitment to maintaining safe, modern systems that support residents and businesses throughout our community.”

Crews rebuilt the heater building, which ensures natural gas remains at the proper temperature for safety and system reliability. The project included a new regulator building, which monitors gas pressure as it's distributed to homes and businesses. Additionally, new supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and remote terminal unit (RTU) equipment were installed. This equipment allows crews to remotely control gas pressure for safety and watch closely for an outage.

The original gate station was built in 1993. The $17.2 million investment helps ensure customers will have reliable gas service for decades to come and is an example of work accomplished through the Company’s prior rate case. RG&E will continue directly investing in communities, making sure customers have the energy they need when it matters the most.
