RG&E Receives National Recognition for Gas Safety Program
American Gas Association recognized Company’s Damage Prevention Vehicle Program, designed to protect underground infrastructure during excavations
ROCHESTER, N.Y. — December 16, 2025 — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) was recognized by the American Gas Association (AGA) for best practices in damage prevention performance in 2024. RG&E was recognized for its Damage Prevention Vehicle (DPV) Program.
The program consists of a team of auditors who audit UDig NY sites in the Company’s service area. UDig NY is a statewide partnership with utility companies, excavators, communities, and home and business owners, aimed at preventing damage to underground facilities and protecting the public through education. Before an excavation begins, the excavator must submit a UDig request.
“Being recognized by the AGA for our gas safety practices is an honor,” said Director of RG&E’s Gas Operations and Technical Services, Ross Disbennett. “Both of these programs are forward-looking, with the goal to prevent damage to underground piping systems and provide state-specific educational material for safe excavation practices.”
The program is seeing results. From 2023 to 2024, there was a 16 percent reduction in damages. DPV auditors proactively work to get ahead of potential damage, making sure contractors ensure gas mark-outs are visible. If auditors encounter sites without proper markings, they explain why it’s not safe to dig. If an excavator tries to bypass the UDig NY system, program auditors can issue a no-damage violation with the state. The purpose of the program is to build relationships with excavators for the shared goal of keeping excavators safe while protecting our underground facilities.
UDig NY is a free service. Contractors can schedule projects by contacting UDig NY at UDigNY.org or by calling 811 between two and 10 full working days before digging begins. If the Company’s underground facilities are damaged or disturbed, call 911, then notify RG&E at 800.743.1702 for natural gas or 800.743.1701 for electricity.
