RG&E Customers Asked to Schedule Appointment for Smart Meter Installations

Smart meters offer convenience, more control, and expanded choice in understanding and managing energy use

Customers with indoor meters encouraged to opt in by contacting RG&E customer service

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — November 12, 2025 — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) is encouraging customers to schedule an appointment to receive a smart meter as the Company nears conclusion of the initial rollout in New York. Smart meters offer customers convenience, control, and expanded choice in understanding and managing energy use. The Company is dedicated to meeting the energy needs of customers and has taken significant steps to build a smarter energy infrastructure.

“Our smart meters have been instrumental in the modernization of the grid,” said Nancy Zurell, program director of smart grids for Avangrid. “So far, we have installed more than 1.6 million smart meters across the state. They’re safe, secure, and empower customers to responsibly manage their energy consumption.”

There’s a wide range of benefits enabled by smart meters compared to legacy meters. Smart meters automatically transmit usage data, so the need for bill estimates, onsite visits, and customer meter reads is greatly reduced. Their technology allows the Company to pinpoint and respond to outages more quickly. It also expedites the moving process for customers by providing faster access to electricity service.

Customers who previously opted out of smart meters or those whose meters are located indoors can begin the process to opt in by contacting RG&E customer service at 800.743.2110.

By using a smart meter, customers receive additional tools that enable them to manage their energy use. Energy Manager enables customers to view information about their energy consumption down to the hour, allowing them to better understand how they’re using energy in a home or business. With this information, customers are empowered to make any necessary, individual changes to their own energy habits.

Customers with smart meters also have access to RG&E’s usage alerts. This feature, launched in May, provides details about a customer’s energy use via text or email. Customers will get a notification if they have abnormally high or low usage, if they surpass a monthly energy use threshold, or a recap of their weekly energy use. Usage alerts allow customers to make informed decisions, such as adjusting the thermostat, identifying malfunctioning appliances, or cutting back on unnecessary use.
