NYSEG and RG&E Remind Customers to Dig Safely by Calling 811 First
Prevent injuries and damage to underground electric lines and gas pipes
BINGHAMTON, NY — September 21, 2021 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas & Electric (RG&E) remind contractors and homeowners to have underground utilities marked before starting any excavation project. This free service is essential to protect themselves and others from injury and to prevent damage to underground electric lines and gas pipes. Remember to contact Dig Safely New York by calling 811 at least two and not more than 10 full working days before the start of any excavation project.
Every year, there are dozens of incidents involving third-party damage to NYSEG and RG&E underground natural gas and electric facilities. These incidents can result in road closures, evacuations, destroyed buildings, serious injuries, and even fatalities.
“Professional contractors and excavators are required by law to call Dig Safely New York before digging, and it would be prudent of homeowners performing their own work to do so as well,” said Al Langland, Vice President of Operations & Engineering, NYSEG and RG&E. “A simple call can ensure everyone’s safety before projects as small as building a fence or as large as installing an in-ground pool.”
Dig Safely New York is free and available to receive calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
