NYSEG and RG&E Upgrade Over 50 Miles of Gas Main Infrastructure

In 2025, Companies invested more than $77M to upgrade aging infrastructure to ensure long-term safety and reliability

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — March 25, 2026 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) replaced more than 50 miles of gas main in 2025, part of the Companies’ Infrastructure Replacement Program. The program proactively replaces aging materials to ensure the long-term safety, reliability, and environmental performance of natural gas distribution systems.

“While the pipes may be in satisfactory condition for service, they have an increased likelihood of issues due to their age,” said Vice President of NYSEG and RG&E Gas Operations Tom Scappaticci. “Replacing these legacy materials before there is an issue increases public safety, minimizes the potential for emergency work or incidents, and ensures compliance with evolving federal and state pipeline safety regulations.”

The pipes being replaced have been used for more than 60 years.  Aging infrastructure is more susceptible to corrosion and other integrity risks, which increases the likelihood of leaks. Replacing older pipes helps ensure safe and reliable service.

Newer pipeline materials improve operational reliability and also decrease long-term maintenance costs. In 2025, RG&E invested $27M in natural gas pipe replacement, and NYSEG invested $50M, funded by the Companies’ current rate case.

In RG&E’s service territory, most of the infrastructure replacement work has been completed in Monroe County, with nearly 18 miles of natural gas pipe replaced. Work was also done in the surrounding Wayne, Livingston, and Genesee counties. In NYSEG’s service territory, most of the work was completed in Olean, Ithaca, Geneva, and Elmira. Work will continue in 2026 in both RG&E’s and NYSEG’s service areas.
