NYSEG and RG&E Remind Customers to Schedule Inside Service Line Inspections

Ongoing inspections support safe delivery of natural gas

Utilities conducting mandatory state and federal inspections

Reinforcement of NYS code may subject customers to physical service disconnection if inspections are not completed

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — October 1, 2026 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) are reminding customers to schedule inside service line or inside natural gas meter inspections. These are mandatory state and federal inspections that support the safe delivery of natural gas. The Companies or its qualified contractors will attempt to gain access through various communications, including mail notifications, phone calls, and door hangers.

The entire inspection process takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It confirms safe operation or helps to identify any potential issues such as excessive corrosion, abnormal operating conditions, or leaks that could pose a problem for customers and property if not addressed and repaired. If crews suspect a leak or corrosion, the Companies will address the concern at no cost to the customer if it involves the utility’s infrastructure.

Disconnection and fees are required. If NYSEG and RG&E are unable to gain access to a meter after repeated attempts in person, or by phone or mail, gas service could be shut off until it is inspected and deemed safe, and customers may be charged a $100 fee.  If crews still can’t access inside meters, reinforcement of a New York State code requires utilities to physically disconnect natural gas service from NYSEG and RG&E’s distribution system.  Any request for gas service after physical disconnection occurs may require installation of a new service line, with customers responsible for 100 percent of the costs associated with reinstallation.

“Customer safety is our highest priority. Our qualified inspectors use specialized tools to perform visual and physical assessments and help ensure the safe, reliable delivery of natural gas to our customers’ homes,” said Tom Scappaticci, Vice President of NYSEG and RG&E Gas Engineering and Operations. This step is only taken as a last resort after multiple attempts to arrange access have been unsuccessful and the inspection remains incomplete.”

There are approximately 1,036 meters that need to be inspected and are at risk of physical disconnection in NYSEG territory, and 4,742 in RG&E territory. The Companies continue sending emails, letters, and making phone calls to remind customers to schedule appointments. Crews are expanding their appointment hours to allow flexibility.

Only NYSEG and RG&E employees and qualified contractors will perform the inspections. They will identify themselves by showing a green or yellow company identification badge before entering a home. NYSEG and RG&E encourage customers to always ask to see the ID of any employee or contractor. You can expect to see inspectors in your neighborhood Mondays through Saturdays. If customers are not available or we are unable to access the meter, we will leave an information card.  You can learn more about the inspections at Gas Safety Inspections - NYSEG or Gas Safety Inspections - RGE.
