NYSEG and RG&E Reach Milestone 1.5M Smart Meter Installations

Smart Meters equal fewer estimated bills, faster outage response, and Energy Manager tool

Majority of installations to be completed by end of year

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — August 6, 2025 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) announced another significant milestone in smart meter upgrades across New York State. The Companies have installed 1.5 million smart meters.

The upgrade began in 2022. Smart meter installations have largely been completed in the Sodus, Canandaigua, Brewster, Lancaster, Binghamton, Elmira, Ithaca, Liberty, Hornell, and Fillmore divisions. The new technology provides smart and more efficient energy infrastructure for customers.

“This is an incredible and exciting accomplishment for our crews and our partner vendors, who have worked hard these past few years to complete these installations,” said Patricia Nilsen, CEO of NYSEG and RG&E. “We’re also excited for our customers who will receive the benefits of this game-changing technology that will improve service.”

Smart Meters offer customers immediate benefits, including bills based on actual, monthly readings,  quicker response during outages, and more efficient connection and disconnection for customers moving in and moving out. Powered by the smart meter, the launch of Energy Manager provides customers with by-the-hour data, helping them understand their monthly and even daily energy use.

Smart meters are electric or natural gas meter modules with two-way wireless communications between the meter and the Company’s systems. They securely transmit usage and meter data automatically, generating bills based on actual use versus manual meter reading or estimates. This technology allows customers a better understanding of, and control over, their energy bills.

The majority of installations in all 17 NYSEG and RG&E divisions are expected to be completed by the end of 2025, but there will be areas that continue into 2026.
