NYSEG and RG&E Have Invested More Than $300M in Gas Infrastructure and Modernization Since 2023

Investments funded hundreds of natural gas safety and modernization projects including replacing over 100 miles of gas main lines throughout service areas  

 

The safe and reliable delivery of natural gas is a top priority for the Companies 

 

BINGHMATON, N.Y. — May 15, 2025 — New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) have invested $300 million since 2023 on their natural gas infrastructure, replacing more than 100 miles of main in the last two years. With more than 271,000 gas customers in NYSEG territory and another 393,000 at RG&E, natural gas is a safe and reliable fuel that Upstate New Yorkers rely upon. The safe, reliable, and affordable delivery of this important resource is a top priority for the Companies.  

 

“Investing in our natural gas infrastructure and safety programs is a focus for Gas Operations at NYSEG and RG&E,” said Tom Scappaticci, senior director of Gas Operations at NYSEG and RG&E. “The investments we make cover hundreds of projects that benefit our customers, including safety inspections of our assets, modernization of our stations, reliability efforts, and state mandates.” 

 

NYSEG and RG&E have a comprehensive gas safety inspection process that reviews the thousands of miles of gas transmission and distribution pipelines the Companies maintain in accordance with Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration and New York State guidelines, as well as leak prone main programs and reliability projects to modernize the system. In addition, the Companies frequently communicate on the importance of UDig and gas safety programs to residential and business customers as well as contractors and construction entities across the state. 

 

Natural gas has an excellent safety record because of the industry’s and our diligence in maintaining, operating and monitoring its vast transmission and distribution system. Investing in this important fuel source is one aspect of providing customers with the safe and reliable energy they’ve come to expect from NYSEG and RG&E.
