East Rochester Substation 62 Upgrade Project
As part of our ongoing commitment to delivering safe and reliable service, we are partnering with our parent company, Avangrid, to upgrade the electric delivery system across our service areas. These enhancements are designed to meet updated electric transmission reliability standards.
Enhancing reliability through infrastructure upgrades
We are investing in infrastructure to support the region’s growing energy needs while working closely with local communities to minimize environmental and neighborhood impact.
To comply with updated reliability standards from the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), we are planning an upgrade of certain components of the electric delivery systems in the Town/Village of East Rochester and the surrounding communities. Specifically, we will be modernizing Substation 62.
This modernization will:
- Increase the substation’s capacity
- Improve asset conditions
- Strengthen reliability for RG&E customers
In addition to enhancing the resiliency of the grid, the project will incorporate updated technological components that meet current industry standards for safety and performance. While the existing transformers and control building will remain in place, improvements to other outdated infrastructure will help enhance the overall appearance of the substation within the community.

Equipment modernization
The modern digital equipment will make it easier to restore power and reduce restoration time in the event there is a service interruption.
Upgrade project scope includes:

- Preparation of the existing building to incorporate new state-of-the-art 34.5 kV Gas Insulated Switch-gear with included breakers and modern control systems.
- Installation of updated outdoor support equipment; replacement of circuit termination structures and new underground cable systems.
- Installation of updated lighting to incorporate modern LED fixtures.
- Distribution circuit upgrade: Reconfiguration of the two existing 34.5 circuits to accommodate the new equipment inside the station and eliminate unnecessary tapping of the lines, Tie in connection of the new additional 34.5 circuit (which was previously installed in 2022); all of which is needed to increase network reliability and upgrade facility capacity.
