Statement from Mark S. Lynch Regarding a Cooperative Smart Grid Investment Grant Initiative

Technology is transforming our business,” said Mark S. Lynch, president of NYSEG and RG&E. “To ensure that technology provides significant benefits to our customers in terms of efficiency, reliability and service quality, partnerships with organizations such as the NYISO, government, educational institutions and vendors are critical.”

“Another example of implementing technology to enhance reliability at NYSEG and RG&E is our $20 million-plus, multi-year project to develop an integrated energy control center platform in Binghamton,” Lynch said. “It will provide for integrated GIS mapping, trouble/outage control and transmission, distribution and substation remote control. Once completed in 2014, the system will provide real-time transmission, substation and distribution situational awareness; it will detect issues before they result in an outage, and reroute power, if possible; in essence integrated technologies will mean a self-healing system. Couple this with the deployment of mobility applications for our field personnel and we will have a centralized, real-time view and control of our systems and our field resources, so that if an outage does occur, we can be more efficient in crew mobilization and customer notification.”
