RG&E Warns Public to Beware of 'Green Dot MoneyPak Card' Scams
Rochester, New York — Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) reports a number of calls from customers who have received bill collection calls from someone identifying himself as “Carl” and claiming to represent RG&E.
Customers have been warned of immediate shutoff of service and instructed to purchase a “Green Dot MoneyPak Card” and call a phone number starting with “347” with the card information.
The caller has tried to work his deception mostly on the owners of small businesses and restaurants in Rochester and the surrounding area.
RG&E is alerting customers to this scam and offers these tips to keep account information secure:
- RG&E will not call a customer for payment if his or her account is in good standing;
- Customers who need to make an urgent payment should do so by calling RG&E directly at
1.800.743.2110 to insure that their account is properly credited;
- Customers who have any questions about a call they have received for an overdue payment are likewise urged to contact RG&E at the 1.800.743.2110 number.
