NYSEG AND RG&E TO USE HELICOPTERS FOR INSPECTION OF
ELECTRIC TRANSMISSION EQUIPMENT AND NATURAL GAS TRANSMISSION RIGHTS OF WAY
Rochester, NY, November 2, 2010 – Area residents shouldn’t be alarmed if they see helicopters hovering over power lines and flying low over natural gas pipeline rights of way in the coming weeks.
NYSEG will inspect its 115-kilovolt electric transmission structures and equipment by helicopter from mid-November through December. The work will begin in NYSEG’s Plattsburgh Division and move on to the company’s Geneva, Hornell, Elmira, Ithaca, Binghamton and Oneonta divisions. The schedule is dependent on favorable flying conditions.
“Safety and reliability are top priorities at NYSEG and RG&E and we expend a lot of time and resources to ensure that our customers enjoy safe, uninterrupted service. To that end, we will conduct low level and ‘stop and hover’ inspections to spot equipment issues that could potentially affect service if they are not repaired in a timely fashion,” said Walt Matyjas, director - electric distribution for NYSEG and RG&E.
“A helicopter provides an excellent vantage point and makes inspecting the power lines quick and efficient,” Matyjas said.
Natural Gas Transmission Rights of Way Inspections
Both NYSEG and RG&E will inspect natural gas transmission rights of way in the Ithaca, Binghamton, Elmira, Geneva, Lockport and Rochester regions by helicopter from November 9 through 11, weather permitting. Aerial inspection of natural gas rights of way enables the companies to spot vegetation or encroachment issues that may hinder access by maintenance and repair crews.
